NABA Butterfly Counts

The NABA Butterfly Counts, a program for the North American Butterfly Association, is a compilation of all butterflies observed at sites within a 15-mile diameter count circle in a one-day period. The annually published reports provide a tremendous amount of information about the geographical distribution and relative population sizes of the species counted. Comparisons of the results across years can be used to monitor changes in butterfly populations and study the effects of weather and habitat change on North American butterflies.

The 438 U.S. counts in 2012 were held in 45 states plus the District of Columbia. Florida led in number of counts (60, down from 62 last year), followed by California (29, up 1 from last year) and Tennessee (a newcomer in the top three at 24). Fourteen other states submitted 10-23 counts, 23 states reported 2-9 counts, and five states plus D.C. reported a single count. No counts were submitted from Hawaii, Kentucky, Nevada, or Utah.

The 23 Canadian counts in 2012 were held in 2 provinces. Ontario reported the most counts (19, up 1 from last year), while Saskatchewan fielded 4 (down 2). Mexico submitted 1 count, from the state of Nuevo Leon.

We welcome 11 new counts this year, all in the U.S.

Copies of the 2012 and previous NABA Butterfly Count Reports (years 1982-1984, 1986, 1987, 1989-1992, 1994, 1998-2000, 2002-2007, 2010-2011 are also available).
