[Paul Opler in field with butterfly net]

After serving the count program as volunteer co-editor of the count report since the 1982 report, Paul has now retired from the count report to devote his time to his many other endeavors, such as this one. Thank you very, very much to him for his indispensible contributions to the count program.

[Sleepy Orange]

One of two Sleepy Oranges on the Indian Cave, NE count, held on 28 July 2001. This is an unsual find - a southern species that sometimes moves northward during the summer but isn't believed to be resident year-round in this area. Photo by Babs Padelford. The count with the most Sleepy Oranges (500) was Pettigrew State Park, NC.

[Reakirt's Blue]

The Reakirt's Blue on the Metro New Orleans, LA count, held on 24 June 2001, nectared on black-eyed Susan in a garden in Audubon Park. The count with the most Reakirt's Blues (1286) was Midland, TX.

[Checkered White (female)]

A female Checkered White on the Deep Portage, MN, held on 7 July 2001, nectared on hoary alyssum. Checkered Whites had a higher than usual presence on counts in central North America. Photo by John Weber, Jr. The count with the most Checkered Whites (1380) was High Line Canal, CO.

[Checkered White]

A Checkered White on the Nickel Preserve, OK count, held on 14 July 2001, nectared on fleabane. The count with the most Checkered Whites (1380) was High Line Canal, CO.

[Blue Metalmark]

The Painted Lady had an explosion in numbres in 2001: this species was 1 of every 13 individuals found on John Weber Jr.'s six north central Minnesota counts in 2001, vs. 1 of every 4036 individuals in 2000! Photo by John Weber Jr. The count with the most Painted Ladies (1223) was High Line Canal, CO.
