One of the goals of the WBA work plan is to involve more members in
WBA activities. Here are some of the activities we'd like you to help
with. None of these projects requires a lot of time—you can
choose how much of your time to share with WBA.

· Bring refreshments to one of the membership meetings.

· Coordinate sales of WBA materials (tee shirts, checklists, field
info booklets).

· Help with a butterfly garden project at Magnuson Park.
In order to spread the message of butterfly conservation to the
greater public, the Washington Butterfly Association must become more
involved in the community. For this reason, the Washington Butterfly
Association is taking up a butterfly gardening and restoration
project at Magnuson Park in Seattle. With help from the Magnuson
Environmental Stewardship Alliance (MESA), the Washington Butterfly
Association will take on the restoration of Magnuson Park from fields of invasive
plants to a thriving park full of wildlife. MESA already has many
people helping for birds and native plants, and here we enter to help
the butterflies. Dates are to be announced at a future meeting.
We will need help with surveys, digging, planting, weeding, etc.
MESA will provide all the gardening equipment and plant material.
This should be a very exciting project and extend the message of
butterfly conservation in urban life to those that wouldn't know
otherwise!

· Help study the silver-bordered fritillary in Eastern Washington.
This master's degree project is related to the conservation of silver-bordered fritillary (SBF) habitat. The main thrust is the effects of grazing on the SBF's violet host plants (typically Viola palustris or V. nephrophyla).
Tighe Stuart will be setting up grazing plots and analyzing the effects of different treatments on the density / health / reproduction / etc. of the violets.
He is looking for looking for a few good WBA folks to come to Eastern Washington and observe SBF's for a few days during the summers of 2007 and 2008. There are two tasks that he has in mind for those interested:
1.) Larval searches and
2.) Oviposition tracking.
If you are interested in more information, contact Tighe at
clypeata@gmail.com
or call him at (509) 447-2644.

· Help with the annual conference. We haven't identified specific tasks for the committee members, but could include everything from arranging for a keynote speaker to collecting tickets for the Saturday evening dinner. Many jobs will be limited to the weekend of the conference.
