8th Annual NABA-Bentsen 2006 4th of July Count

The Bentsen/NABA count was done on July 29, 2006. Temperature 78-99 degrees. Wind 10-15 miles SE. 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Mostly sunny.

Main Observation:  American Snouts. Ecosystem Disturbance?  Global Warming? Climactic Changes?  Extremely large numbers and prevalent throughout all areas surveyed.  Particularly high numbers streaming across Rio Grande River at Anzalduas Park and in blooming Anacua trees.   Recent years have been marked by isolated incidences of snouts migrating through the area.  However, this year markedly larger numbers( tens of millions+) of snouts have either streamed though or stayed in the RGV area for weeks and as of day of the count still have a substantial presence.

Visited World Birding Center/Bentsen, Bentsen Lake garden and pavilion trail, Bentsen Palm Village RV, Mission West RV,  National Butterfly Center, Lucy’s Garden, Mission Parks and Recreation Garden, Booker’s Bend, La Lomita Park, Anzalduas County Park.

*Special thanks to Jim Booker, Josh Rose and the World Birding Center for providing the tram to access Bentsen State Park.

Participants: Gil Quintanilla, Jan & Dave Dauphin, Jim Booker, Townsend Booker, Amber Garza, Crystal Salinas, Javier de Leon, Joshua S. Rose, Derek A. Muschalek, Richard Lehman, Willie Sekula.
