Jim Ziebol Butterfly Garden
Dennis Bozzay & Yvonne Homeyer
The Jim Ziebol Butterfly Garden at Busch Conservation Area in St. Charles County was named after the St. Louis Chapter’s co-founder who started us on the journey of sight-identifying butterflies. The Garden contains 40 species of native Missouri plants, and will tolerate a lot of sun (our garden does not get any shade). Some of our plants are host plants for butterflies and some were chosen because butterflies like to nectar on the flowers. No pesticides have ever been used in our garden. It is located near the main headquarters building at Busch, alongside the parking lot.
The Butterfly Garden was started in 2000, and is a joint project with MDC and WGNSS. Jack Harris planted the first plant, Verbesina virginica (White Crownbeard). Dennis Bozzay has prepared plant name markers to help us identify all the plants that you will see the next time you visit our Butterfly Garden. (See the list.)
Garden Bench/Arbor
The Jim Ziebol Butterfly Garden at Busch Conservation Area is easier to find now than ever. Your eyes will be instantly drawn to the newest feature in the garden - a hand-crafted wooden bench and arbor that was built by dedicated NABA members Dennis Bozzay, Dave Berry and Terry Kelley on Sunday June 13th, 2004. They were assisted by Dennis’ neighbor, Bernie Berghager.
The bench was made possible by a generous donation of $300.00 from NABA St. Louis member Dolores Kaufman. (Thank you Dolores!).
Dolores writes, “Congratulations to all who built it—at one time I would have been with them swinging a hammer, but the imprint of 74 years and a bout with cancer now limits many of my activities! So I substitute donations when I can.”
Pipevine (Aristolochia sp.) will be planted and will eventually cover the arbor with its luxuriant growth, and will provide a shady retreat. So the next time you’re at the Butterfly Garden, check out this latest improvement. It’s a standout, literally!
A color photo (by NABA St. Louis Public Relations Chairperson, Kate Boden) of the new bench/arbor appears below:

A sign was added to the bench arbor in 2005, honoring Bill Brandhorst, who passed away in 2005.
