NABA's MISSION STATEMENT: BUTTERFLY WALKS SCHEDULE: October 14, Sunday, Tyson Research Center, 10:45 A.M. Cancelled: October 21, Sunday, Busch Wildlife Area, will NOT be held. All walks: Bring water, insect repellent, hat, sunscreen, binoculars, field guide, snack/lunch, friend. Consider long pants. *********************************************************** NABA HOLIDAY POTLUCK PARTY We will have a holiday potluck party on Sunday, December 9, 3:00 P.M. at the home of Lee and Torrey Berger. They will also present their slide show & talk "Mostly Missouri Prairie Wildflowers." More details to follow later. Please mark your calendar! *********************************************************** BUTTERFLY HOUSE FALL FESTIVAL On 9/22, NABA participated in the Butterfly House Fall Festival at Faust Park. Many visitors stopped by our table to talk and learn about NABA, and we met lots of people from the Butterfly House and the other organizations that were there that day. Jim Ziebol designed our display board, using many of Dennis Bozzay's photographs of local butterflies. Thanks to Jim and Dennis, we now have a striking and attractive display that we can use at events such as this and the upcoming Conservation Forum on October 4. (See separate article). This was our first chance to use the colorful butterfly-print tablecloth that Vicki Flier made. Ann Early, Bob Siemer, Bob Noe, Claudia Noe, Jim Ziebol and Yvonne Homeyer volunteered at our table throughout the day. Other NABA members who stopped by to say hello were Karen Haller, Bonnie Gayton, and Tom Houlihan. We appreciate the invitation from Donna Dupske, Education Chairperson at the Butterfly House and a NABA member, to participate in this event. *********************************************************** CONSERVATION FORUM NABA-St. Louis has been invited to have a display table at the Fifth Annual Conservation Forum which will be held at the Living World, St. Louis Zoo, on Thursday, October 4, starting at 5:00 p.m. Donna Dupske and Jim Ziebol have volunteered to staff the table. Breakout sessions on a wide range of conservation topics will be offered. Pioneer Forest, Trailnet, The Green Center, Webster Groves Nature Study Society, Mo. Dept. of Natural Resources, Mo. Dept. of Conservation and other groups will give half-hour talks. Yvonne Homeyer will present a session on "Songbirds in Decline." Keynote speakers from the Mo. Botanical Garden and the Field Museum in Chicago follow the breakout sessions. Admission is free but the light supper costs $11. To register, contact Patrick Osborne at UMSL ( posborne@jinx.umsl.edu ). *********************************************************** BOARD MEMBER RESIGNATION: Regretfully, Jeannie Moe has asked us to accept her resignation as Butterfly Gardening Chairperson. Jeannie was instrumental in getting the Jim Ziebol Butterfly Garden at Busch C.A. underway. Many of the plants you see today were donated by her. Jeannie also put in many hours of volunteer time planting, weeding and watering. Jeannie was part of the gardening team from Day 1 and we will miss her. Jeannie is completing a Masters Degree in Botany at SIU-Edwardsville and her professional commitments did not leave her enough time to continue on our Board. We wish Jeannie well in her new career and hope to see her often at our Butterfly Walks and other events. *********************************************************** WALKS 'N TALKS The Walks 'N Talks program for beginning butterfliers that Linda Virga, our Education Chairperson, initiated this summer was a great success. We want to thank the Missouri Botanical Gardens for co-sponsoring these walks and for publicizing them to its members. Twenty-six people attended the walk on Sept. 15! This is a great way to introduce people to butterflies at a location with which they are already familiar. We hope to repeat the program next summer and Linda will be looking for volunteers to help her. Good work, Linda! *********************************************************** BUTTERFLY CLASSES AT MERAMEC WELL-ATTENDED Thanks to Vicki Flier, the Master Naturalist Certificate program at Meramec Community College is an established success. Vicki, a NABA member who serves as Education Chairperson of St. Louis Audubon Society, invited NABA to offer a class in the program, which we have done for two semesters. Dr. Tom Bratkowski, an entomologist at Maryville University and a former NABA-St. Louis Board member, taught the biology session and Jim Ziebol and Yvonne Homeyer taught the identification session, using a video they produced of local butterflies. Several of the class participants attended the butterfly walk at Hilda Young C.A. on Sept. 16. The class will be offered again in the spring. *********************************************************** NEW MEMBERS: The following people have become members of the St. Louis Chapter of NABA since September 1: Stanley Anderson, Charlotte Godat, Gail Hoffman, Robert C. Remmert and Samantha Ruffini. Welcome to the new butterfly lovers! *********************************************************** YOUR OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS: If you have questions or suggestions, e-mail Yvonne Homeyer PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: BOARD MEETING The next Board meeting will be Sunday, October 7, 2:00 P.M.
