REVISED BUTTERFLY WALKS SCHEDULE Here is the schedule of all our walks for the rest of the season. We have tried to vary it by type of habitat so we can get a good variety of butterflies. This year our Chapter will hold its Count at Busch Conservation Area on Sunday, July 8. Meet at the Jim Z. Butterfly Garden (by the headquarters parking lot) at 9:45 a.m. Bring water, sunscreen, hat, and insect repellent. There is a charge of $3.00 per person, which is paid to the national office to cover the cost of publishing the results of all the counts. Our chapter will get a copy of the book. Our chapter's Kathy Phelps, who lives in Harrisburg, Illinois, has been doing a 4th of July Count in the Shawnee National Forest for 9 years. This year, Jim Ziebol and Yvonne Homeyer will be joining her Count. We will report the results of both counts in the next newsletter. *********************************************************** HELP WANTED by Linda Virga Our purpose, as stated by NABA, is to promote the public enjoyment and conservation of butterflies. Our St. Louis chapter needs volunteers to help prepare and present programs. JIM ZIEBOL BUTTERFLY GARDEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Butterfly Garden looks absolutely wonderful! Many plants are in bloom right now, including Blazing Star, Purple Coneflower, Gray-headed Coneflower, Common Milkweed, Monarda and Slender Mountain Mint. All our plants are tall and thriving. Jeannie Moe, Dennis Bozzay and Betty Tanner have added plants this year in addition to their TLC, and new member Terry Kelley spread wood chips on all the paths. Thanks to Terry Kelley and Randy Korotev for getting all those loads of wood chips out there! If you haven't seen our garden since last year, you'll be amazed! We very much need as many members as possible to join in as volunteers to assist with the watering of the Jim Ziebol Butterfly Garden at Busch C.A.. It involves setting up hoses (with the assistance of Busch staff), letting the sprinkler do its job for an hour or two (while you are out taking a butterfly walk!) and then taking the hoses down and putting them back. It can be done during the week or on the weekend. If you are willing to contribute at least two hours this summer, could you let Yvonne Homeyer know as soon as possible: homeyer@earthlink.net)? Thanks for your help! *********************************************************** NEW MEMBERS The following people have become members of the St. Louis Chapter of NABA since June 1: Donna Dupske, Terry Kelley and Rose Schulte. Welcome to our new members! MEMBER SPOTLIGHT One of our informal objectives is to get to know each other while we get to know the butterflies. In an effort to give our members a little more personal information, this newsletter's spot light is shining on CLAUDIA and BOB NOE. Claudia and Bob are confirmed plant and animal lovers. In fact, their yard in Chesterfield has been certified as backyard wildlife habitat #19029 by the Wildlife Federation. Claudia enjoys the NABA walks and says she is learning a lot about butterflies. She volunteers at the Humane Society and visits hospitals with their golden retriever "Field." Claudia is also active in animal update programs at the zoo. Bob is a retired chemistry teacher who is deeply involved in volunteer work now. He is a docent at the Butterfly House and the St. Louis Zoo (serious training involved) and volunteers at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Claudia grew up in St. Louis and Bob has lived here since 1956. We are lucky to have these two energetic people in our midst. They are teachers and students of nature at the same time. Say hello to Claudia and Bob the next time you get the chance! *********************************************************** BUTTERFLY CLASSES NABA-St. Louis is offering two Butterfly classes at Meramec Community College as part of the "Master Naturalist" program started by Vicki Flier, Education Chairperson of St. Louis Audubon Society. The classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6 and 13. Participants will be invited to join us on our butterfly walk on Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Hilda Young Conservation Area. The Sept. 6 class will be on the natural history of butterflies and will be taught by Dr. tom Bratkowski of Maryville University. The Sept. 13 class will be on butterfly identification and will be taught by Jim Ziebol and Yvonne Homeyer. It will include information about the life cycle of butterflies as well as a video of local butterflies. To register for the courses, call 314-984-7777 after August 1. *********************************************************** BUTTERFLY HOUSE FALL FESTIVAL The Butterfly House is planning a fall festival to be held Sept. 18-22 at its facility at Faust County Park. Our chapter will be distributing information at a table on Saturday, Sept. 22. For more information about the festival, contact our member (the Butterfly House's head of the Education Dept.) Donna Dupske, (636) 530-0076 xtsn 13. To volunteer to work at our table, please call Linda Virga, our Education Chairperson, at (314) 544-3313. *********************************************************** AND MORE! UNASSIGNED READING An interesting article "Say Goodbye to Grass" appears in the July 2 issue of Time magazine, page 56. Apparently lots of people are tired of being slaves to sterile lawns. The article also mentions a book Redesigning the American Lawn by Gordon Geballe which might be worth a look.
