The Patagonia Butterfly Garden

The Patagonia Butterfly Garden was started in 1997 by a small group of volunteers from the Patagonia Area.  The founder of the group had seen butterfly gardens in other communities and thought Patagonia, with its phenomenal number of butterflies, would be a perfect place for such a garden.
Permission to renovate the existing planted  area  in the park was given by the Patagonia Town Council who agreed to supply the water for the garden.  Many local residents, businesses, and organizations made donations for plants and irrigation equipment.
Valuable advice for planting the garden was provided by Jim Brock- a noted butterfly expert living in Tucson.  Volunteers perform all the maintenance for the garden.
Noted butterfly expert and author, Bob Stewart, now lives in the area and maintains the butterfly list for the garden.
If you would like to get involved with the garden, make a donation, or get more information about the butterflies, you may reach the committee by inquiring at Kazzam Nature Center, 348 Naugle Ave., Patagonia or by email to bullwinkle@theriver
Tax deductible donations to the garden can be made through the Patagonia Woman's Club, PO Box 892 ,  Patagonia,AZ 85624

SASI has a butterfly garden created by Steve Prchal and Jim Brock as a demonstration of the concepts and plants covered in Desert Butterfly Gardening (SASI & ANPS, 1996).  It was installed in July of that year and has grown in nicely.  We have had the beginnings of website coverage for a couple years with a complete listing of the plants initially planted.  There remains much more to do, primarily scanning photos and getting them posted to the site.  Volunteers welcome!!!

The garden is located at the Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute in Tucson Mountain ParkSASI is open to the public on the 4th Saturday of each month or by appointment.

The Oracle Butterfly Garden

Mary Salter writes:

We have built a Butterfly Garden here in Oracle.  It's at the Community Center on American Avenue, and we are still working on it.  My husband and I went to Patagonia a few years ago, and we saw the garden there.  Martin was
much taken with it, but he didn't have enough strength to organize here, since he was in the last stages of malignant melanoma.  I couldn't persuade anyone else to do it after he died, so I did it.  Lots of people helped -- sixty or so-  they put in the irrigation and helped to plant the butterfly plants.  I got big rocks to add to it; we added some tiles and a beautiful bench; and we are in the process of putting in more wonderful tiles made by Clayton Gooden.  It has been a most healing effort for me, and I see lots of people sitting there, looking at the butterflies, which are mostly gone now, but they'll be back.  We of course had lots of problems with the rabbits and the javelinas, but I think they've called a truce.  Maybe.
My address is: 90 Hobe Road. P.O. Box 990. Oracle, AZ 85623, and my phone number is 520-896-2043.  I have no web site, but it might be a good idea.
