History

Chrysalis In Time  was established in December of 1999 to bring together people in northeast Ohio sharing an interest in butterflies and their natural history.  The name Chrysalis In Time was chosen to emphasize the organization's commitment to acting now to preserve and create habitats for butterflies; to educate people about the butterflies; and to be vigilant observers of butterfly abundance and variety.  The chapter logo, designed by Gail LeMasters, depicts a Monarch butterfly chrysalis suspended from within an hourglass and is a unique emblem of chapter goals.

Chrysalis In Time initiated NABA 4th of July counts in three areas, Towner's Woods (Portage County), Quail Hollow State Park (Summit County), and Wolf Creek Nature Center (Medina County) during its first year (summer 2000).  Members also participate and sponsor several existing counts coordinated by area parks, reserves, and private residents.

In accordance with its goal to create butterfly habitats, CIT also coordinated with community Scout groups in its first year to establish butterfly gardens at the Altercare Nursing Home, Shepard's Gate in Hartville, Ohio; and at Windsor Nursing Home (N. Canton)  (summer 2001).  In addition, a host plant promotion of pipevine and pawpaw spearheaded by Stanley Stine and Jocie Harhay, brought these hard to find plants into the gardens of many members and butterfly gardeners.

In December of 2000 the first chapter newsletter, Chrysalis Times,  was published, providing an avenue for members to discuss butterfly gardening, photography, and rearing techniques as well as general news and the results of the first season of chapter counts.  A regular publication schedule for the newsletter of two issues per year (May and November) took effect January 2002.  The official chapter website was launched in 2001.

Throughout the winter of 2001, slide show presentations were given by members, a tradition continued in 2002 with topics ranging from creating pond habitats to organic gardening.

As we start our third year, we look forward to another exciting year in the field and hearing from you! Be a part of our history by participating in 2002!
