Conservation

The 4th of July Count is an ongoing program of NABA to census the butterflies of North America and to publish the results. The counts are usually held the few weeks before or after the 4th of July. Click here for sites in the Great Lakes area that have a tradition of participating in the 4th of July Counts.

Dragonfly and Damselfly Watching

The chapter also embraces membership interests in dragonflies and damselflies. Members go on field trips to watch these fascinating insects. The chapter promotes efforts to allay myths about these highly beneficial insects. Members also contribute to dragonfly census efforts of northeast Ohio and participate in projects to conserve and restore dragonfly and damselfly habitat.

Educational Monthly Meetings

The chapter holds regular meetings to plan events, view slide presentations, and share observations and information. Presentation topics include photography techniques and strategies, butterfly identification, organic gardening, creating butterfly habitats, butterfly natural history, and more. Slide shows also highlight members' trips across the country and the wildlife they observe along the way.

Field Trips

We travel to natural areas around the state and also tour members' butterfly gardens. Field trips are viewed as opportunities for members to share expertise and learn from one another not only about butterflies, but whatever is encountered along the trail. Field trip participants are expected to respect the habitat and the species that rely upon it.

Outreach Projects

Conservation and education at a grass roots level are important parts of the chapter's activities. Example outreach projects include planting butterfly gardens at nursing homes and schools. Chapter members also volunteer their time and knowledge to support efforts of local teachers and naturalists through guest presentations, demonstrations, and field trips.
