Butterflies of Chatsworth, Ocean County, New Jersey


DIRECTIONS: This site can be reached by taking the Garden State Parkway to Exit 63 (from North) or Exit 63A (from South) to Route 72 West. Take this road to a small parking area on the left (south) side just before the mile post 9, 4 miles west of Route 539.

HABITAT: Typical Pine Barrens habitat, sandy with white cedars, blueberries and Sand Myrtle.

U, uncommon, likely to see 0-3 individuals per visit to the right spot at the right time
R, rare, unlikely to see any individuals even at the right spots at the right time
S, stray, vagrant, not seen most years

E, early in month
M, middle of month
L, late in month

Numbers refer to months. For example, the first species, Cabbage White, is uncommon from April through October.

NOTES: This site is generally covered only in the early spring, which in part explains the relatively few species observed. It can be combined with a visit to nearby Warren Grove.
