NABA Northern Crescents Meeting Notes

April 28, 2010

The spring planning meeting of NABA-Northern Crescents Chapter was held at Gander Mountain. on Wed., April 28 at 6:30 pm.  Present were Marilyn Carter, Jim Phillips, Tim Craig, Donna Peterson, Jim Sanders and Pat Sanders.

Marilyn gave a financial report.  We have a small balance.  The group agreed to pay for the few new plants needed for the Benedictine Garden.

Donna reported that she and Jeannie had cleaned up the Benedictine Garden.  Plants are coming up already but seem shorter than usual.  Jim P. offered to bring compost to the garden and Donna gratefully accepted.

Jim Phillips brought a tentative schedule for the Butterfly Counts, so we can pencil them in on our calendars.  He will send out reminders closer to the actual dates.  Here’s the schedule so far:

Gail Gilliland has chosen to give up the Monarch Larval Monitoring, which she has so faithfully done for 7 years at the Knowlton Creek Site.  She and Foster deserve some well-earned freedom from the weekly demands and schedule constraints to pursue their retirement travels!  We are so thankful for her faithful commitment to this important work!  We are looking for volunteers to commit to one day per month to help keep this project going.  The continued collection of data from this site adds to the collective record of monarch movement and health as they migrate.  Please get in touch with Marilyn Carter or Pat Sanders if you’re interested in participating in this project.

Jeannie Bruno has graciously offered her gardens for our summer tour and potluck in August.  Date to be announced.  We plan to tour Jeannie’s gardens and then enjoy a potluck dinner and tour at the BHC garden.  We’d like to take a Chapter photo at this event to include with our article in Butterfly Gardener, which will be published in the Winter 2010 Issue.  If anyone has another garden tour idea, please let us know!  We are always up for seeing more flowers, and where there are flowers, there are often butterflies!

Jim Phillips has a good start on the article about our Chapter for the Winter 2010 Issue of Butterfly Gardener.  He would like photos, preferably of more native and local butterflies, such as our namesake Northern Crescent.  Photos need to be high resolution (300dpi) and can be close-ups of butterflies or members engaged in Chapter activities.  Contact Jim Phillips if you have photos you’d like to share.
