NABA Northern Crescents Meeting Minutes
Tuesday March 14, 2006
1. Pat T. showed the group a sample flier that will be ready March 15. The brochure contains information about our chapter and activities.
2. Pat T. received a $25 gift from a friend for butterflies. Northern Lights will match the funds if she buys a book for the Duluth Public Library. She plans to purchase "Butterflies of the East Coast" by Rick Cech & Guy Tudor. The cost is $49.50.
3. Marilyn & Wally are working on a letter to teachers. They could put a brochure as an attachment to an e-mail to teachers. They plan to also send out paper copies.
4. Jim Phillips contributed a butterfly shaped rosette iron for a special drawing at this meeting. Pat Sanders won the drawing. Thanks, Jim!
5. May 2 is the Northern Lights book club meeting on "Chasing Monarchs" by Pyle. Meet at Chester Creek Café.
6. Annette Strom's students, present and past, gave a fabulous presentation about their Monarch Larval Monitoring Project data. They reported on their trip to California in early December 2005, where they did the same presentations for the Monarch Conference. Their research was about the effects of mowing on their monitoring site. Their site has been monitored since 2000. Half their site is mowed by the city of Duluth and half is not. These young adults did a very professional, informed, and detailed presentation along with an open forum for questions. They also shared personal photos of their trip to CA. and some of the sights they visited. A wonderful evening! Much credit should be given to Ms. Strom's dedication to education, to her students, and to the monarch project. The students' enthusiasm and knowledge and commitment to the research were very inspiring! Wonderful!
Next meeting will be Tuesday April 11, 2006 at 6:30p.m. at the MN Pollution Control Agency Office, Paulucci Building in Canal Park.
