NABA Northern Crescents Meeting Minutes

Tuesday February 15, 2006

  1. Annette Strom and her Ordean students will be guests at the next meeting on March 14. They will discuss their projects on butterfly population studies and timings of milk weed cuttings.

  2. Jim Larson passed out information cards about Monarch Watch

  3. Possible advertisement for May program could be program on KDAL with an interview with Karen Oberhauser. Perhaps information could be given on Channel 8's great gardening program.

  4. Pat T. shared samples of publicity fliers about our chapter and activities. These fliers could be given out at garden centers, the Minong gardening conference, spring extravaganza, Hartley nature center, Sugarloaf Nature Center, Wolf Ridge, Great Lakes Visitor Center, etc. Gail will check on the cost of having them printed at a print shop near her home. General agreement was to print 500-1000.

  5. Pat T. suggested we have posters printed to be handed out or hung up around the community to advertise Karen's visit in May.

  6. Marilyn & Wally still need to find addresses for teachers to send Introduction letters & invitations and follow up postcards.

  7. Other discussion of May butterfly meeting

    1. Foster & Gail will help Karen get where she needs to be at right time.

    2. Jim & Pat S. will help with registration along with Foster and Mary J.

    3. Donna will have a garden and habitat table

    4. Jim S. will put together a power point of Muriel's garden at the Benedictine

    5. Jim L. will bring MLM posters for display

    6. Dave McLean has a contact at Channel 6 which may help get an interview

    7. Marsha is the contact person at Ordean

    8. Karen's presentation will be in the media room unless it's found to be too small. Vendors could also fit in that room so everything can be close.

    9. Pat and John T. will arrange to tour the site to see what is needed and how many electrical outlets, etc. are there.

    10. Jim S. will be technology back up.

    11. Donna will send brochures to master gardeners.

    12. Gail will try contacting Larry Weber again about doing and article about the program.

    13. Possibly contact someone from Northland Reader

    14. Marilyn donated a beautiful butterfly puzzle for a drawing

  8. Jim Larson shared that there will be a dragonfly symposium in Grantsburg June 22-25.

  9. Foster brought forward the suggestion that our chapter could monitor another local species of butterfly such as Milbert's tortoise shell. We could record information according to accepted protocol as a way to gather information that would be helpful in tracking effects of global warming. Wally will look into protocols that would be acceptable. Many butterflies are migrating north as our climate warms. Jay Cooke Park has both northern and southern butterflies merging together. Some monitoring of what's going on could be helpful.

  10. Pat T. reminded everyone that the NABA website has a site to record what we see in our gardens and individuals can keep their personal lists there.

  11. Remember NABA dues are tax deductible. Also, the conservation fund which can be contributed to via MN tax forms goes toward funding conservation people such as Robert Dana.

Next meeting March 14, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at the MN Pollution Control Agency Office, Paulucci Building in Canal Park. Teacher Annette Strom and her students will present results of their monarch projects.
