Jim Sanders talked about the gypsy moths near Tower, MN. He reported that last year's spraying was successful, but there is an unusually large population of gypsy moths in Cook County up the North Shore. This year the Forest Service, in cooperation with other agencies, will spray 200,000 acres in an effort to slow the spread of European gypsy moths. Last year's spraying by Tower treated 500 acres. Tiny pheromone flakes will be used to confuse male European gypsy moths causing a significant reduction in their reproductive success. Rather than attracting females; it will repel them. The flakes will be dropped by aircraft in July, and 50%of the flakes will last a second year. The pheromone flakes are unique to gypsy moths, so there is no impact to other moth species or butterflies. Public involvement on this new initiative will begin in February.
-
Saturday February 18 is the Science Fair at UMD. Jim P., Pat T., & Mary Johnson will judge the butterfly projects. We give an award of a 1year subscription to NABA and "Four Wings and a Prayer" book.
The next meeting is Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at the MN Pollution Control Agency Office, Paulucci Building in Canal Park .
