NOVEMBER 12, 2002 MEETING - Jim and Alice Larson's trip to Mexico

Pat Thomas announced that Monarch materials were on display for our perusal, including posters, embroidery, books and handouts. Handouts included "Flight of Kings", Monarch migration maps, "The Monarch Butterfly;" books included Chasing Monarchs by R.M Pyle, Four Wings and a Prayer by Sue Halpern and The World of the Monarch Butterfly by Eric Grace. Also on display were handmade thank you notes from Annette Strom's class at Ordean School. Our chapter purchased Monarch tags for their classroom and home raised Monarchs in late summer, so they could be tagged before release.

Pat announced that the Monarchs have arrived in the Mexican sanctuaries as of this date.

Pat asked whether we would agree to nominate Jim Larson as Vice President, in response to his e-mail to her stating that he would be interested in this position. We voted and it was unanimous, Jim is now acting V.P.

Pat passed around the sign-up sheets from the October 2002 meeting for the following, so additional people would have an opportunity to sign up for: 1) fund raising, 2) phone tree list for meetings, 3) future meeting topics

Pat gave a brief Treasurer's Report.

The December meeting will be on dragonflies, featuring a researcher from the DNR who will speak on dragonfly ecology.

Pat would like to start a primitive newsletter, and she will bring this to the December meeting. Pat also had available 2 copies of a draft of the article she wrote about our chapter for publication in the NABA "Butterfly Gardener" which she asked us to look and and welcomed any suggestions. Photos will be submitted with the article.

Pat spoke to Northern Lights Bookstore in Canal Park, they have an environmental book group that meets the last Thursday of each month. The store owner suggested that our group could participate in one of the meetings, and we could choose a butterfly book to be read by participants before the discussion meeting at the bookstore. Pat asked for a show of hands for interest, and their was significant interest. She suggested Four Wings and a Prayer by Pat Halpern as the book, and it was agreed. The meetings which were open were February or April; it was voted that we attend the April 24th meeting (6:30pm at Northern Lights in DeWitt Seitz Building). Since this book was chosen for a book club meeting, you could get a 10% discount if you decide to purchase it at Northern Lights. Note: it is not out in paperback yet. Four Wings and a Prayer should also be available through our library system.

Next Jim and Alice Larson spoke about their trip to Mexico in 12/01, with an elderhostel group of 20 people. They brought a video, The Monarch, a Butterfly Beyond Borders, made in BC, Canada. After viewing this interesting video Jim and Alice discussed their trip further and passed around photos from the trip. A handout covered key points of the video, and identified what was in the photos that were passed around. Discussion closed at 8:07pm.

Pat announed that Kristin had let her know that one of our members, Muriel was seriously ill and presently out of the state. Pat asked that we sign some butterfly cards which she donated, as get well cards to be sent to Muriel. Pat will include an 8x10 photo of the Muriel, Doreen and Pat from our Northern Crescents 2002 Duluth butterfly count.

Cathy Leece showed some butterfly items that could be purchased locally: Monarch iron on transfers from Wal-Mart, and butterfly package address labels on clearance at local post offices (and Hallmark).

The meeting was adjourned around 8:30pm. Some members of the Fund Raising Committee met to plan a Fund Raising meeting.
