OCTOBER 8, 2002 MEETING - Digital Camera Demonstrations

Pat Thomas, President, started the meeting with a report on Monarch migration.
Monarchs have reached TX, MS, GA, AL. Some early arrivals are in the sanctuaries already. They are not sure why they are there so early; two possibilities are that they were hatched there or emigrated in very early.

The NABA Director would like us to submit an article about our chapter. Pat will be writing the article, and asked for 35mm photos from anyone in the chapter who has any. She thinks the deadline for the article will be mid-December.

Changes to the September minutes, which are posted on line, made by Pat, are as follows:
We decided to keep meeting 2nd Tues. of month.
We voted to fund the Ordean School Monarch tagging in the future.
One e-mail address will be removed.

The presentation on digital photography began at 6:45pm.
Doreen Hansen started by talking about the handouts, including prices, a review from Consumer Reports and an internet review, and how to search for info using internet search engines. Doreen showed her camera and went through its features, including the card and card reader. She showed some of her photos and talked about making composite photos with PhotoShop.

Next Sue McDonald talked about her Sony camera which takes a floppy disk and a Memory Stick instead of a Compact Flash card. She discussed resolution and the number of megapixels her camera. She also discussed the macro and zoom and video cable features of her camera.

Finally, Dudley Edmondson suggested buying a digital camera with interchangeable lenses for butterfly photography use. He also discussed the many advantages of digital photography, including being able to change the film speed any time and the fact that there is so little waste for the potential number of photos you can take. We discussed the pros and cons of how to get pictures into a digital format, whether you have a conventional or a digital camera. He also brought up the issue that technology changes and that your storage format may not be usable in the future, for example, some other format will eventually replace CDs. Two laptops were running slide shows for viewing various digital photos taken by the speakers.

The meeting adjourned around 8:15pm.
