Meeting #9
525 South Lake Avenue

SEPTEMBER 10, 2002 MEETING - End of summer catch up

Treasury report was given and a phone tree for non web users was discussed.

Welcome back after a summer of garden tours, a Harvest Festival, and butterfly counts.

KBJR (channel 6) featured two local butterfly gardens.

Our chapter's first butterfly count was done on July 27, at Enger Tower - very successful once the sun came out. Several common wood nymphs, one monarch, 2 meadow fritillaries, one banded hairstreak with lots of pollen on its face, 3 black swallowtails that nectared on goldenrod, 2 striped hairstreaks on sumac, one orange male sulphur, 2 coral hairstreaks on valerian. The number of hairstreaks was actually higher and we were able to observe them closely and for long periods of time. Two 2 hairstreaks observed circling above the shrubs and trees. Common wood nymphs were also seen in several places.

We were treated to Jim Larsen's discussion about tagging Monarchs and Doreen Hansen's wonderful collection of butterflies and luna moth cocoon.

I am relinquishing my job as secretary but several volunteers will take over in the future (Gail, Doreen, and Cathy) as rotating secretaries unless someone wishes to be nominated.

Tom Kasper also needs his position of Vice President filled as he has trouble getting to meetings held on the 2nd Tuesday.

Fund raising was discussed - possible uses of the money - help schools with monarch tagging funds.

Sign up papers were passed around including ideas for the making of a banner, a hotline list for butterfly sightings, and a sign up to help with fund raising.

Fund raising ideas were discussed including butterfly tattoos, face paintings, and "Monarch" brand cofffee..

We had a guest -Dudley Edmonson who showed us his wonderful photographs. Just before the meeting ended, Dudley was inundated with requests to return and teach members about digital camera use.

Meeting concluded at 7:45.
