May 14, 2002 MEETING - Butterfly Gardening by Pat Thomas

President Pat Thomas made the following announcements before the gardening program:

1. Bev, Jane, Anne, Kathryn, Jim and Pat visited the zoo site and decided it would be a good first project for our chapter. Mostly nectar plants will be selected for the established gardens. The other area will be turned into a meadow and have milkweed and other native plants for butterflies. it was suggested that the zoo contact Prairie Restaurations for an estimate on that portion of the work. The zoo will allow us to hold educatinal meetings in exchange for our work in the butterfly gardens. Anyone interested in planning, planting or shopping for plants is invited to join. Contact Kathryn (218-525-1235)

2. National NABA's program for butterfly gardens and habitats needs volunteers for preparing regional brochures for our area (northwestern Wisconsin and northeastern Minnesota). They are interested in which nectar and host plants work well and also those that do not work well in your garden or area. Contact Pat if you're interested.

3. Larry Weber's butterfly i.d. classes start next week. Flyers are available and pre-registration is suggested but not necessary. Please bring field guides to class.

4. The Grand Marais class was postponed due to cold weather. Anyone interested in carpooling please see Pat.

5. Pat passed out a first draft of a flyer she made to introduce our group to the public. Please suggest any changes to her or Doreen. The information on this flyer will be put onto our website by Doreen as part of the homepage.

6. KBJR Channel 6 is looking for butterfly gardens to film later this summer, probably mid/late July. Pat offered their new herb bed for the spring planting. Please contact her if you are interested in sharing your gardens.

7. Monarch Larva Monitoring Project: Are you interested in counting caterpillars and recording milkweed density this summer? This project is being done by the University in their monarch research. Cathy Leece has participated in this and you can contact her for additional information. Pat Thomas has the necessary paperwork.

8. Logo ideas. Connie Todd submitted a wonderful idea for our chapter logo. Perhaps it can be part of our stationary, newsletter or webpage.

9. Our website is beautiful! Doreen has been working very hard at setting it up and still needs help with text. Please see her or Pat if you are interested in helping with this.

10. Our next meeting will be on photography with Tom Kasper.

11. Pat Thomas at this point presented her program on butterfly gardening and how to attract these beautiful insects into our northland gardens.

12. Meeting ended around 8:15.

Respectfully submitted,

Pat Thomas (taking minutes since Barb could not be here)
