April 2002 Minutes

Northern Crescents Chapter of NABA
Meeting #4
525 South Lake Avenue
Paulucci Building, 4th Floor
Duluth, MN

April 9, 2002 MEETING - General Discussion, Various Topics

Meeting began at 6:35. (The bridge was up and traffic was stalled)

President Pat Thomas informed us that the organization was getting many requests for our services. Lake Superior Zoo, Great Lakes Aquarium, Channel 6 with Eric Green, Hartley Nature Center, Venture North, and the City of Duluth were a few Pat mentioned. Suggestions also came up for a butterfly greenhouse and museum.

Monarch butterfly migration was discussed. Two places to connect through Google or Yahoo would be Monarch Watch and Journey North. Reasons for colony demise of monarchs were discussed. Also discussed was the planting of common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca ) to provide a a food source for monarchs. Two books were recommended for those interested in monarchs, Chasing Monarchs by Robert M. Pyle and On a Wing and a Prayer by Sue Halperin.

Larry Weber class dates are Tuesday May 21, Tuesday May 28, and June 4. All classes are from 6:30 - 7:30. Suite 400. Registration forms were made available.

It was decided that all officers would remain until September and then election would be held. Anyone wishing to be Treasurer is welcome to talk to Pat. We have a balance of $285.00.

The next part of the meeting was brainstorming. Ideas were thrown around about fundraisers. Having a table at the National Birding Convention or a craft or bazaar sale utilizing member's talents. A book was suggested called Butterfly Gardening in Minnesota. This book can be ordered online for $5.00 at www.extension.umn.edu.
Larry also asked if anyone had seen any early sightings of butterflies. Compton Tortoiseshell had been sighted along with Mourning cloak. These are butterflies that winter as adults.

Doreen Hansen is working diligently on a web site. It was decided that we wanted it up and running as soon as possible. In rushing to get the site up and running there may be some limitations but would provide communication with NABA members. Doreen's e-mail is instar1@gmail.com. Doreen is looking for creative ideas for the web site and welcomes volunteers.

Pat and several volunteers are going to scout out the Lake Superior Zoo's butterfly garden and will report back information during the May 14th meeting.

We ended the meeting with Muriel Shirey displaying her delightful butterfly paintings.

Respectfully submitted,

B. Ellingson
