JANUARY 15, 2002 MEETING - INTRODUCTIONS, ELECTIONS
The metamorphosis of The first Duluth Chapter meeting of the non-profit
North American Butterfly Association was called to order by Pat Thomas
at 6:30 on Tuesday January 15, 2002 to a distinguished crowd of over
60 people.
NABA has been established in 16 states with 30 chapters. There are
no chapters in Minnesota or Wisconsin. NABA's intent is to encourage
recreational butterfly identification, gardening, photography, and conservation
efforts. The 4th of July butterfly count was also mentioned.
Membership was discussed, $ 30.00 Individual and Family $40.00. Pat
would look into how much of that fee would be used in our local chapter.
This fee includes 2 quarterly magazines, The American Butterflies and
Butterfly Gardening.
Pat asked people to voluntarily introduce themselves. This first meeting
attracted Master gardeners, photographers, artists, writers, a bee keeper,
an entomologist from UMD, high school students, teachers, and many other
butterfly enthusiasts. It was exciting to hear the stories behind each
person's encounters and interests related to butterflies. Workshops
were also announced.
An election was held and Pat Thomas was enthusiastically elected the
Duluth's Chapter's first President. Tom Kasper, Duluth's gardener/park
maintenance coordinator, was elected the first Vice President, Barb
Ellingson was elected secretary, and Pat also assumed the treasury position.
It was agreed that most meetings would be on the second Tuesday of
the month. Next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2002.
Larry Weber was introduced as the chapter's speaker for the February
meeting. Larry will present a slide show, which will ID common local
species of butterflies. Larry discussed his own butterfly count in Carlton.
Larry's latest publication, "Butterflies of the North Woods"
was available.
Meeting ended at 7:30 P.M.
