KIDS ACTIVITY TEAM MEMBERS NEEDED
While science teams will be great for some families with young children, specific trips or experiences may not be ideal for everyone. Thus, we're planning to have some kids activities at the Base Camp for families that are looking for something a little less active or that have young children. These ideas include an art project (a biodiversity banner of species found), a mini-BioBlitz with hoola-hoop transects, and other ideas. A few folks have volunteered to work at Base Camp with kids, I've listed these names below and hope that we can recruit a few other "generalists" to
help teach kids and their families about biodiversity, the Great Lakes, etc. The following have expressed interest in working with kids at base camp:
Sara Kubarek, Great Lakes Aquarium (Confirmed)
Lauren Hildebrandt, UMD Student (Confirmed)
BASE CAMP SPEAKERS NEEDED
In addition to regular survey "field trips" for the BioBlitz, we are planning to have short educational talks at Base Camp. There will be a large awning tent and a set up for about 2 dozen chairs where citizens can take a break and enjoy a 20-30 minute talk with 10 minutes of Q & A. Right now I'm thinking of having one talk each at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Here's what we have right now:
Becky Sapper, UWEX - All about the NERR
Susan and Stephen Mullholland, Duluth Archeology Center - Natural History of the Duluth/Superior Region Wetland Water Table Monitoring Demonstration?
BASE CAMP DISPLAY SPACE AVAILABLE
Our Base Camp tents will have space for non-profit and general educational displays. We'll have some 6' tables (nothing too fancy) and a dry place for your local group to set up a display, provide educational materials, newsletters, etc. We also welcome groups that want to provide educational information on volunteer activities, water monitoring, etc. Non-profits are welcome to solicit memberships and sell fundraising items. Several groups have requested table space, I've listed those below and encourage any others to contact me with their request. We'll have a deadline for renting tables later in June and I will send out a reminder email then. The following have expressed an interest in setting up a display:
St. Louis River Alliance
UWEX - Info about the NERR
Natural Resources Foundation
Great Lakes Aquarium
Storm Water Monitoring - City of Superior
Wild Ones
FREE ORGANIC TSHIRTS
I am also eager to gather t-shirt sizes for participants. We'll be printing designs on organic cotton shirts in early June and delivering free shirts to all our teams at the event. Sizes run a bit small, so please consider ordering "one size up" when you submit your shirt size.
