NABA members at Mt. Pisgah.

Saturday, April 23
Taylor’s Checkerspot and McDonald Forest
We kick off the season extra-early again this year to catch a glimpse of the rare Taylor’s Checkerspot near Corvallis.  From there we’ll head for roadsides and ridge tops in McDonald Forest to spot other early spring fliers.  We’ll meet at the Campbell Senior Center parking lot (155 High Street, Eugene) at 10:00 a.m.  Space is limited to 15 people.  Pre-registration is required.  To pre-register, call Sabine Dutoit at 541-461-3596.

Sunday, May 15
Butterfly Walk and NABA Booth at the Mt. Pisgah Wildflower Festival
Neil Björklund will be leading a butterfly walk as part of the Mt. Pisgah Wildflower festival again this year.   The butterfly walk is planned to start at 1:30 p.m.   Last year we saw a surprising number of species even on a cool, cloudy day.  Visit the NABA Eugene-Springfield booth, pick up a copy of our revised guide to Lane County butterfly sites, or the new edition of the Pocket Guide to Butterflies of Lane County, or the fabulous new NABA-ES Hoffman’s Checkerspot t-shirt.

Saturday, May 21
Spring butterflies of the West Eugene Wetlands
Late spring is an excellent time to observe butterflies and wildflowers in the West Eugene Wetlands.  This will be a leisurely 3-hour field trip led by Eric Wold.  Meet at the BLM West Eugene Wetlands Office at 751 S. Danebo at 1:00 pm.  Space is limited to 20 people.  Pre-registration required. To pre-register, call Holly McRae at 683-6494.

Sunday, June 26
4th of July Butterfly Count: Eugene-Springfield
The first of our two annual butterfly counts will again be led by veteran count organizer Sharon Blick. On a beautiful day last year, three teams tallied a near-record 24 species of butterflies.  The count takes in Mt. Pisgah, the West Eugene Wetlands, Spencer Butte and more.  Note that the count is on a Sunday this year.  We’ll meet at the Campbell Senior Center parking lot (155 High Street, Eugene) at 9:00 a.m.  Pre-registration is required and there is a $3 fee for participants.  To pre-register, please call Sharon Blick at 541-683-4635.

Saturday, July 9
Bohemia Mountain & Fairview Peak
We’re excited to be offering our first field trip to the Bohemia Mountain area, one of Lane County’s premier butterfly sites.  High butterfly diversity, stunning wildflower displays, fascinating history, and outstanding scenic views will combine to make this a special trip, led by Chapter President Neil Björklund.  We’ll meet at the Campbell Senior Center parking lot (155 High Street, Eugene) at 9:00 a.m.  Space is limited to 15 people.  Pre-registration is required.  To pre-register, call trip leader Neil Björklund at 541-344-2053.

Saturday, July 16
4th of July Butterfly Count: Browder Ridge, Central Cascades
Our 4th annual count in the meadows of the central Cascades will again be organized by Eric Wold.  Last year, two teams visited five sites and set a new record of 39 species, with hundreds of individual butterflies.  A NW Forest Pass is required to park at trailheads.  Trails range from easy to moderately difficult, depending on which team you’re on.  Meet at the Campbell Senior Center parking lot (155 High Street, Eugene) at 8:00 a.m.  We plan on returning by 6 p.m. for a gathering at Track Towne Pizza on Franklin Blvd in Eugene (around 6:00) to have some pizza (on us) and share stories and results from the day.  Pre-registration required, and there is a $3 fee to participate.  To pre-register call Eric (541-431-7388).

Saturday, August 6
Scott Lake and Frog Camp
We’re adding a late season trip this year to take in the high elevation meadows around Scott Lake and Frog Camp, on scenic Highway 242.  The scattered meadows in this area have turned up many interesting species that aren’t found elsewhere in Lane County, including the beautiful and diminutive Mormon Fritillary.  Veteran naturalist Bruce Newhouse will lead the way and share his great knowledge of plants and butterflies.  We’ll meet at the Campbell Senior Center parking lot (155 High Street, Eugene) at 9:00 a.m.  Space is limited to 15 people.  Pre-registration is required.  To pre-register, call Ellie Ryan at 684-8973.

Monday, October 3, 6:30 p.m.
NABA-ES Five Year Anniversary Celebration with Robert Michael Pyle!!!!
This special event will feature one of Dr. Pyle’s famous slide shows, an award ceremony, our officer elections, and other fun activities, all served up with special refreshments.  All this takes place at EWEB’s spacious Training Room in the EWEB North Building at 500 East 4th Avenue.

Sunday, October 30
NABA Booth at the Mt. Pisgah Wildflower Festival
This one isn’t a field trip, but it’s another fun event at the Mt. Pisgah Arboretum.  Come visit the NABA Eugene-Springfield booth, pick up a copy of Finding Lane County Butterflies, or the latest edition of Butterflies of Lane County, or one of our popular t-shirts designed by Tanya Harvey.
