Meetings:

May 19th NABA-BEST Board Meeting
March 6th NABA-BEST meeting
February 17, 2007 Board Meeting

May 19th NABA-BEST Board Meeting

After watching the bats at the Waugh Street Bridge, we discovered we had a quorum of BEST board members meeting afterwards at Kelly Walker's home for a party. So it was that we had a 50 minute board meeting from 11:35pm to 12:25am, the night of Saturday, May 19, 2007.

Board members present: Caroline Day
                                            David Henderson
                                            Kelly Walker
                                            Wally Ward
                                            Hugh Wedgeworth

BEST members also in attendance: Anissa Curtis
                                                               Dan Day
                                                               Ednelza Henderson
                                                               Diane Milano

Issues discussed: Venue for Summer meetings
                                Feasibility of Mitchell's Satyr Quest
Future of the Publicity Chair position

The meeting began with Wally stating that due to a full summer programming schedule, HMNS would not be able to have us meet there during the summer. Several alternatives were discussed, including the various Harris County Community Centers. Anissa volunteered to take charge of this.

Wally then brought up the fact that he is running out of ideas for speakers, and ventured the idea that we should again meet every other month again. This was turned down out of hand, but Ednelza put forth the idea that not all meetings have to feature a speaker, but rather that the evening's programming could consist of member slide shows, identification lessons, etc. Dan then stated that he had some appropriate videos on hand that he could show at any time and we agreed to have this done at the June meeting.

David then brought forth the idea of a quest for Mitchell's Satyr in Alabama. As the flight season is in early June, trip preparations would have to be accelerated. A trip quorum of 5 was put forth, but not set. More information will be needed.

Due to health reasons, Caroline resigned from her position as Publicity Chair. After much discussion, Ednelza was nominated and approved unanimously to succeed her, with the caveat that Ednelza would be able to freely seek a willing co-chair.

The meeting was then adjourned.

March 6th NABA-BEST meeting

The business portion of the meeting began at 7:30.

Kathy Cook is unable to temporarily fulfill secretarial duties due to cancer. Kelly Walker volunteered to fill in during the interim. There was a unanimous vote for Kelly to temporarily fill the secretary position.

David Henderson welcomed visitors and members who do not regularly attend meetings.

Wally Ward welcomed and introduced Dr. Jeff Neff for the Native Bee program.

Billie Strickland thanked Odie Asscherick and Charles Buren for providing the refreshments. Volunteers for providing refreshments for the 2007 meetings were solicited.

David Henderson reviewed 2007 count information. Highlights include 2 new counts- 4/14 Roy Larsen Sandylands and 5/5 Big Thicket. Members were encouraged to participate in order to gather new data, especially on the elusive Yucca Giant-Skipper. The Henaos recently visited the Big Thicket and shared species seen there.

David Henderson announced that Farrar Stockton has resigned and that Steve Abbey is the current treasurer. The chapter’s current balance is around $1,200.00 .

Other brief reports on the February Board Meeting include that there will no longer be a $2.00 fee for NABA-BEST field trips.

Bob Honig will lead a field trip on Sun. May 6, at W.G. Jones State Forest in search of odonates.

Kelly Walker is organizing a garden tour. Suggestions for dates were requested. The group suggested a May date when a count is not scheduled.

Nancy Greig updated the group on the status of the meeting room. The old theatre/meeting place no longer exists due to construction. She is doing her best to accommodate the group. HMNS generally charges $500./hour. We are currently using the facilities free of charge, therefore the meeting room may not be consistent.

Bob Honig announced the Katy Prairie Conservancy Bayou Blitz Sun. 4/1. It is an attempt to collect data on any species located on KPC property. Go to katyprairie.org for details and to volunteer.

The business portion of the meeting ended at 7:55 p.m.

The lecture/Q&A ended at 9:15 p.m.

Attendees:
David and Ednelza Henderson, Steve Abbey, Bob and Maggie Honig, Odie Asscherick, Rich and Sandy Jesperson, Charles Buren, Ada and David Johnson, Gail Carter, Diane Milano, Carlton Collier, Farrar Stockton, Nancy Greig, Billie Strickland, Sergio and Wanda Henao Kelly Walker, Wally Ward, Hugh Wedgeworth

February 17, 2007

Board Meeting of the Butterfly Enthusiasts of Southeast Texas (BEST)

The Home of David and Ednelza Henderson

Members Present: David Henderson, Wally Ward, Hugh Wedgeworth, Kathie Cook

President David Henderson called the meeting to order at 4:50 p.m. He welcomed new board members Hugh Wedgeworth and Kathie Cook.

  • MINUTES: none.

  • TREASURER’S REPORT: none.

    • BEST has approximately $1000.00, according to Farrar Stockton.

    • Arrangements are being made for Steve Abbey to be able to sign checks. In the meantime, David Henderson and Wally Ward will sign.

BUSINESS

  • Beginning in March, BEST meetings will be held at the Museum of Natural Science in Classroom 3.

  • 2007 BEST Activities: David Henderson presented the proposed schedule of BEST meetings, field trips, nature festivals, and butterfly counts for 2007 (see the attached schedule). This year most of BEST’s activities will be butterfly counts and nature festivals, in order to better support the objectives of NABA and BEST.

    • There will be fewer field trips, and these will generally not be local.

    • The proposed field trip to Grimes County in September is in question, since Don’s son-in-law is ill.

    • Wally Ward is going to Oregon in late June to see blues.

    • In September, Steve Abbey will lead the Attwater count and Wally Ward will lead the Katy Prairie count.

    • A new count has been added to the list for the Big Thicket on May 5. It will be led by David Henderson.

    • The August field trip to SE Arizona should be in mid-July, not August as listed on the schedule, according to Wally Ward.

    • The Mission Butterfly Festival and Earth Day (04/14; conflicts with the new date for the Roy Larsen Sandylands count) will be added to the list of nature festivals.

  • Field Trip Fees: David Henderson proposed cancelling the field trip fees altogether. Wally Ward moved that the fees be changed as proposed; Hugh Wedgeworth seconded the motion. It was passed unanimously.

  • 2007 Speakers: the following list was presented by Wally Ward.

    • March: Native Bees

    • April: Monarch Trip to Mexico (Vic Hitchings)

    • May: Odonate Program (Bob Honig)

    • June: Carlton Collier? (David Henderson will make the request.)

    • September: Butterfly Lucky Bag 3 (Vic Hitchings)

  • Fuji letter: no progress.

  • There was a short discussion of difficulties encountered by some members in renewing NABA memberships.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:00 p.m.
