Ever wonder how a swallowtail at final instar attaches itself to a branch creating
the cremaster attachment and girdle silk to hold the pupa? Here is an excellent video observing it being done. Shows all life stages of the Pipevine Swallowtail. (4.30 minutes) Not the sharpest of photography but very interesting.
Dr. Robert Michael Pyle's Butterfly Big Year
Throughout 2008, noted lepidopterist and writer Robert Michael Pyle undertook an historic journey to find, experience, and identify as many species of butterflies as possible in the United States and Canada. The literary fruits of this project will be published by Houghton Mifflin as a book entitled Swallowtail Seasons: The First Butterfly Big Year.
